HANK

He bellows mightily
in a show of triumph
as if he knows
a traditional gesture of meeting
and the arena explodes in a wave of unbridled applause

Standing at the pinnacle am I
the culmination of my toil
that infinitive moment of tremendous glory
a disbelieving smile covers my face-
I own the earth for this long, long minute

He can feel it, too
aware of his achievement
all eyes upon him
for this is his moment as well
suddenly, in the eyes of others, he is twice as good
he strides long and proud
if he could smile he would

It's over, Dad's buying
I stay to finish what I've started
and humbly accept the round of congratulations
with barely contained jubilance
in every shake of the competitor's hand

Now he's gone
and the monument to our fame sits,
merely collecting dust
and the ribbons aren't as bright

My place of tribulation is not a glamourous theater
not a gorgeous villa
but an aging structure with a rust-streaked tin roof
he walked away on gravel
not a red carpet
and I wore jeans and a polo, not a tuxedo

But that long, long minute
will always shine bright
in my eyes and in my heart
even though we are now apart
Grand Champion

Thank You For Letting Me Show!

This poem was published in the Oklahoma Cowman magazine in the June issue for Fathers Day, and was then sent in to us from Leslie Hufnagel.  The poem was written in thanks to Jerry Edwards, from Luther, Oklahoma, for all of his help, support, and guidence.

Its fathers day and I’m writing this letter
To let you know that you’ve made my life better
I could never repay you all that I owe
For all of your hard work and letting me show
Showing cattle is something that I truly love
It’s more than a hobby - it’s in my blood
It builds my self confidence and makes me feel proud
Even though I’m a little nervous in front of the crowd
It’s taught me to be gracious whether I win or lose
And that is a life skill that I can always use
It was the trophies and ribbons that drew me in
But I stay for the memories and lifelong friends
Showing cattle is something that we do together
It builds a strong family bond that will last forever
So I thank God each night when I pray
For you, and grandma, and this game that we play
But this game that we play comes with a price
And money and time is what you sacrifice
You take care of the cows and calves as they grow
Then you help me pick out which one to show
You buy the chips and even pay for the feed
And always make sure we have what we need
You help me and teach me all that you know
Then help load the trailer when we go to the show
So I just try to work hard and have a good attitude
Because I don't know how else to express my gratitude
Without you to raise ‘em and haul ‘em and such
I’m afraid my show career wouldn’t amount to much

So THANK YOU Grandpa for all that you do
For your hard work and generosity
have helped make a little girls dreams come true.

We Love You Grandpa,
Cassidy & Cobie, ages 9 and 11

i show.....
...and I am the definition of dedication.
...I have felt the despair of "the gate" and I know that I don't want that feeling again, and
...I have experienced the gratification of the handshake and I know that I want that feeling again, again, and again!
...I believe that fitters are actually artists in Wranglers and Rockports.
...I have been to the first pen and I am going back for more!
...I can see the beauty in a rock-solid "brace" and the grace in a "good drive."
...And my favorite color is PURPLE!
...If I have to, I'll sort through 1,000 head and drive as many miles unil I find "The One."
...There is magic in my step, skill in my hands, and electricity in my step.
...And while my classmates are watching TV and playing video games, I am feeding and weighing and exercising and planning and practicing.
...and if Mom's got the video camera and Dad's got a worried look it must be SHOWTIME!
...I know that if it's to be, it's up to me.
...I know the REAL value of groovy tops, jacked fronts, crisp loin edges, and sexy curves.
...I know the best place to watch Grand Drive from is in the Ring!
...I will avoid corners and "low spots" at all costs.
...I can talk the talk and walk the walk and I'm not stopping until I grab the banner!
...After God, my family, and my country, my stock comes next.
...And if you need to find me ... I will be in the barn!!!

I SHOW..... Therefore I AM!!!!
